I although have been utilizing it and find that it is a tremendous help in many different ways and encourage you to use it also. This is about when I started utilizing the notes section of BeerSmith, so the notes might be somewhat of a mess. Neither will estimate efficiencies before your brewday.I made a few revisions to this saison recipe and sort of settled on this. Tl dr Both are great for recipe formulation, and are a little crappy for different reasons for water volumes. IDK if the formulas wrong, it doesn't account for grain moisture content, or the grain yield/potentials are higher than they should be. It always reads a few (3-9) percent higher. Note: IDK what the deal is with brewers friend, but their efficiency tool is not correct.

My obviously unbiased opinion is that the larger software packages make is way too convoluted to get your volumes accurate. Ever want to know what efficiency to expect on a new recipe? Let me tell you. Volumes/temps/efficiencies: Priceless' BiabCalc my mash calculator, for obvious reasons. I feel like they're still a short bit to go before I can use them exclusively.

It will be releasing a new update soon-ish once they iron out all the bugs. Brewtarget is a great team making an opensource free software. Recipe formulation: Beersmith/brewtarget/brewersfriend. Just don't open in 2 places at once and backup the folder BEFORE you add a new device. That way I can do all the figuring out on my desktop, then make any changes on the fly outside on my laptop and they will sync back. Once everything is all figured out I just print the brew day sheet and go.Īlso you can change the data file location to say Dropbox. I can easily tweak the temp to boil and it will update the volume. I hate when a mash out water temp is like 205F and I know there isn't a chance in hell I can stick my hand holding a thermometer in there. I also play with the mash times and temp to easily see what effects it has on the outcomes. Now I can flip between the original and the copy changing 8oz of crystal 60 to 5oz of crystal 80 while keeping the colour the same or change the bittering hop while keeping the IBUs the same.

When I find a new recipe I want to try I can enter and save it, then create a copy that I can change to match the ingredients I have. I can figure out my brews for the next few months add them to my shopping list then print it and make the drive. I live 45min from the LHBS and the inventory tracking and shopping list features are life savers.
